Second Life is a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by a total of 2,663,574 people from around the globe. 

Second Life is much like the Sims but in an online environment through the computer.  You can buy with real money property on the site.  Well you buy Linden dollars with real money, which you use to purchase items in the game.  You can also convert the Linden dollar back to US dollars at a variety of online currency exchanges.

Developers can sell, trade or monetize within the rapidly increasing population of Second Life Residents since the code is now Open Source.
